The ability to operate a slave flash should be included in your first OR your second flash unit. So, one of your flashes should be either an 580EXII or a 600EXII, which are as powerful as you would ever need. The difference between 580 and 600 is the signal, 580 is infrared and requires a clear line of sight to trigger other flashes, and 600 is radiofrequency and doesn't require line of sight to trigger other flashes. The first flash you buy, however, could be a slave-only unit that is triggered by RF or IR, as you prefer. Slave-only units function as standard on-camera flashes and can be used tethered to your camera by a cord.

The flashes should be able to interact with the camera, and will have "E-TTL II compatible" somewhere on the flash.
