nikon 24-120mm or 24-85mm?

Another vote for the 24-120.  Although I have not used the 24-85, I would be surprised if the performance was as good as the 24-120.  As others have said, there is a reason for the "gold ring" Nikon puts on lenses.  I got mine (non-US) used for $750.  I'm smiling every day I use it.
