Speaking as a dad with a 3 yr old and an 18 month old at home, I can say that I have not been disappointed with the D800 at all. Focus is scary fast and I love having the abiltiy to use high ISO for indoor shots of the kids running around. The 24-120 would certainly be a very flexible lens to have but I would also add a 50 1.8. Its small, light, sharp and cheap. A speedlight is also a great thing to have for indoor shots. Even a used SB600 would allow you to bounce a flash off the walls or ceiling or even off camera for more natural lighting and would certianly cost less than a new SB910.

Good Luck with your decision.
