I have a simple answer to this question - Because it makes me happy.

I have no kids only me and my husband and 3 lovely Labradors. If I want to spend my money on lenses and cameras then okay that's what I will spend my money on. After all, it is my money to spend. And I have no heirs. It's all mine to spend while I am here.

And to the thought of using the money towards something else - who says you can't have both?

And I love the responses about cars because I drive a Subaru Forester not new, not top of the line, just basic. Need the space for the dogs, kayak gear, hiking stuff, and lenses! Need the all wheel drive for the places I live and drive. I will drive my Subaru until it has close to 200,000 miles or until my husband's Subaru falls apart and he takes mine and gets me a newer one. Don't really care about having a really cool car. Just a really cool camera and lenses!

And I have a p&s waterproof camera for kayaking. And a second p&s waterproof camera for whoever is kayaking with me. And also a superzoom p&s for... well, I don't know why I have it, but I do.

You do what makes you happy and I'll do what makes me happy. I don't always think of things in terms of this over that - but - why not both?

And you think someone who is not a professional is just a fool for wasting their money on a DSLR.  Well they say a fool and her money are soon parted, but you just try to part this gal from her camera and see who is the fool!  HAHAHA!
