If you look at the photos on your computer screen, both look like same, right?
No. And anyone who doesn't get that is in a bad position for calling other people fools.
In the photo from the pocket camera, everything is sharp.
In the photo from the DSLR, only the part of the photo you wanted sharp, is sharp. Everything else is more or less blurred, nicely giving more attention to the subject.
That is my reason #2 for using a DSLR.
My reason #1 is the feeling of looking through a viewfinder and actually see how the final photo will be, and then when pressing the shutter, having the photo taken immediately. I have been using SLR in the film days, then pocket cameras in the digital days, and when I finally got myself a digital SLR, it was like coming home.
I didn't mean to abuse anybody's feelings but can't help thinking that if the extra money what you spend on getting a DSLR is worth that extra sharpness!! Moreover what is the advantage of sharpness or tonal range or dynamic range or blah blah blah, when whole purpose of taking a photo is recording the time or memory and it remains in your computer or album no matter what type of camera you used for that. So better you save that extra money and use for something else useful.
You're (purposely) confusing snapshots for keepsakes and albums with professionals, hobbyists and enthusiasts taking photos to develop their technique and skill using a complex medium (a DSLR or similar grade camera).
To put it simply, a 'whole purpose' for you does not at all apply to everyone...The same way veteran model train hobbyists cannot be compared to a parent setting up a set for their child under the xmas tree. The former can elevate miniature work to an art form with an eye for detail honed by decades of work, while the latter is doing something fun and traditional.
Neither is wrong, but one is very different from the other. Either way, you shouldn't need someone to spell out what's compelling about a hobby or profession to show basic respect rather than questioning people's investment as 'blah blah blah' frivolous or less 'useful'.
