Yeah, I really don't get why they did this either, then again very little of what Canon has been doing these past few years makes sense to me ...
I too expected this to work, after all, there was mention of "EOS Utility" being supported by the EOS M beforehand - and it does work, it just doesn't do any remote control (you can do file transfer and such).
I wonder if custom firmwares can be an answer (a la Magic Lantern), but I guess that will be a while - if ever. Still it seems to me to be intentional and software-only issue. The hardware should be capable enough!
I might well end up selling the EOS M because of this.
