D5100 - Can't enable HDR function

No matter what I try, the HDR function under the SHOOTING MENU is grayed out so I cannot enable this feature.  What am I doing wrong?  I am not using RAW quality (JPG Fine only); I set the camera to matrix metering and have tried all the automatic and manual shooting settings to no avail.  Any ideas?
