SB-N5 flash creative potential?

I have just bought the new Nikon V1 kit with Nikkor 10-30 lens.

As it does not have built in flash I am thinking if I really need to get SB-N5.

I always had cameras with flash and was never quite satisfied with the result (flat images with harsh shadows) so I tried to avoid using them.

From your experience, is SB-N5 more flexible and useful in real life photography?

Especially I am interested if you use it outdoors as fill in flash.

Will appreciate your advice.
