I think the answer is already contained in your introduction.

If you often use the K-5 with a lens that covers 28-202 when traveling then the 24-105 will be a bit restrictive and you'll notice it.

Myself, I use the 24-105 a lot, when traveling. But it always travels along with my 16-35 and the 70-200 (...sometimes, a specific prime is also included...). I find the range coverage these 3 lenses offer is crucial and no single one can actually replace any other one.

A quick check in Lightroom shows that my most used FL range with the 24-105 is 24mm, then 105mm, followed by mid ranges between 28 and 65mm. Ranges from 85 to 105 have seldom use (...mind you that it has been mostly used with APS-H cameras, first a 1DMKIII and now a 1DMKIV).

That significant usage at both ends means 2 things (1) that I, as most of us, have a tendency to use those barrel physical limits (2) that in some instances a departure beyond those 2 limits would have been useful but a lens change was not practical.

If and when I have to stick to one single lens than, yes, the 24-105 is an excellent compromise.

Hope this helps.

Thank you, PhotoKhan!

Yes, it helps. If you hesitate, like I do right now, then it is valuable to get other people's views.

I agree that 16-35, 24-105 (or 24-70 II), and 70-200 IS are a powerful and excellent combination, if you can accept to carry them around. I could do that at home and at places reachable by car. But my wife likes to travel, and most of my pictures are taken at those trips.

I need to understand that I cannot get all I want, that is a small camera with one lens, big focal range, and excellent image quality (my Pentax K-5 + 18-135 meet the requirements  except to a certain extent the last one). I would really like to have a 5D III, but I do not know if it would meet my needs. I know that there are a few "rangey" lenses like the monstrous Canon 28-300, but with inferior IQ.

I just checked my two best pictures, and they were both taken with focal distance 135 mm, which corresponds to 202 mm in full frame, and this complicates my choice further.
