question about Aperture

I there I am considering moving from a PC + PSP to a retina MBP + Aperture, the problem I have is apparently Aperture does everything automatically; starting to edit the photos while transferring from camera.
Is that so? is it possible to set Aperture not to do anything and then to process the photos on a fully manual, one-by-one basis?
