I didn't mean to abuse anybody's feelings but can't help thinking that if the extra money what you spend on getting a DSLR is worth that extra sharpness!!

Your first post comes across a bit rude, its just your opinion and worth is a subjective thing (food is worth way more then the clothes on your back... if there is none to be had). Feel free to not buy a dslr, a car or a house, but do realize the world has different views then yours, well over 6 billion different views (of whom a very significant portion would prefer food over a camera to begin with). If any different opinion would be wrong wouldn't we all be wrong (or living in a very narcissistic world...which I hope is not the case)

Moreover what is the advantage of sharpness or tonal range or dynamic range or blah blah blah, when whole purpose of taking a photo is recording the time or memory and it remains in your computer or album no matter what type of camera you used for that. So better you save that extra money and use for something else useful.

If that is your goal, you should probably stick to a camera phone, not meant demeaning, but I see the camera phones taking over the compact market for 80% in the coming 5 years. DSLR is a whole different thing. I do see a world of difference from my wildlife pictures versus the ones my wife took with her up scale P&S (which resulted in her upgrading to a nex-7), also on a computer screen. Next the big question in my case how would one steer a studio installation (even as a hobbyist I have a full studio setup). Your needs do not warrant a DSLR (for you, then again you being on this forum, there seems to be part of you saying it is something you are interested in ), mine do and I have the money to spare for that over my other interests.

Have fun with your hobbies, which I hope are as useless and fun as mine
