Coming from Nikon DSLR's, this is such a disappointment. The NEX-7 is not an inexpensive camera, and there is no excuse for a known issue like this to be ongoing. If the LCD requires a cover, than Sony should provide one. I always thought Ken Rockwell was a little harsh on the NEX cameras when he said they are not built to last, but I'm thinking he may be right after all. I've been thinking of making the move to a Fuji X-E1, and this is another incentive to do so. Not just the LCD issue, but the build quality in the long term. I can imagine a year or so down the line wanting to upgrade to a newer model only to find that my NEX-7 is almost worthless on the used market. Better build quality, more traditional controls, and a kit zoom that is getting rave reviews are rushing me in the direction of the X-E1.
Sony cameras have been very reliable for me. I had a Nikon 880 that broke down after a few years, even though it was getting pretty light use in the later years, while I have a number of Sony cameras that are going strong. I even have old batteries that are holding their charge. So, your image of Sony not being built to last seems completely unfounded to me. However, as the other poster stated, film cameras probably are going to last longer. At any rate, if it's going to keep you up at night worrying about it, by all means buy something else, but the grass is always greener on the other side. Good luck!
The Nex-5 I have seems very tough. I've even dropped (accidentally!) the kit lens onto a concrete floor, and it still works great. I wouldn't recommend doing that, but am pleasantly surprised.
This particular feature of the tru-black coating is very prone to wear, however. I recall some people sending their camera back to Sony for repair, when it started wearing off at the edges (not just scratches).
If I needed a better coating on the back at this time, I might try to find another screen protector, perhaps one with an anti-reflective coating. I'm less worried about protection, though, now that the coating has mostly worn off.
