I would not stack a polarizer on top of a UV filter. And usually I don't have a UV or a skylight filter on at all. BUT, I live where it frequently is quite windy and dusty, so I always have a skylight handy in case I need it. I agree with the poster who said lens hoods protect, especially when it comes to bumping into something. But a hood won't keep your glass from getting pitted and scratched by blown dust or sand.
