i can't see them merging the 2 top line DX cameras at the moment

They already have, in effect. They just kept the two merged lines in the catalogue, but neither the D90 nor D300s will be replaced.

The D7000 didn't replace either the D90 or the D300s. The D90 will not have a successor.

In which case the D7000 did replace it, just a phased replacement.

The D90 continued to sell strongly through 2011, the D300s did not.

Yet Nikon did not replace the d300s, even though the D300 line is now more that 5 years old. So, why was that, if it was not 'replaced' functionally by the D7000?

The EOS 60D outsold the 7D by more than 2:1 in Japan in 2011.

Japan is not representative of the world market, very different sales pattens there.

These things we call facts.

Not really. Whether a new model 'replaces' an old model is more a matter of opinion and marketing spin than a 'fact'.

Your speculation that the EOS 7D successor will move downward in spec is more than just groundless - it is wishful thinking on your part.

Not wishful, I have no wishes either way, just my observation of what is going on. Your views may differ from mine but are no more factual.
