Hi Nicholas,

Re: AFS 70-300/4-5.6 lens, I would really recommend this lens, as a few customers who shoot with a variety of f/2.8 tele zoom lenses (for sports, weddings, portraiture, etc...) also have the 70-300 VR in their collection because it is smaller, lighter and, for the price, remarkably sharp   One of Nikon's "best bang for the buck" lenses, IMO.

As for the 14-24/2.8 vs the Tokina 16-28/2.8 lens dilemma; I have sold both items, albeit more of the Nikkors, and neither lens affords you the ability to put on a protection filter .... and I know a few photogs who have stayed away from both lenses due to this fact.    Other allternatives have been mentioned above and, FWIW, CP (Canadian Press) just went Nikon and  their "ultra wide" choice choice was the AFD 17-35/2.8 ...... which protection filter capable although not that much less expensive than the 14-28.

And, just as an aside and you didn't make mention of it, but, have you considered the AFS 28-300 VR as walkabout (alternative to the 70-300) lens?

Cheers and all the best with the lens dilemma

Jack
