50mm is surely a good length for portraits on an APS-C sensor? Plenty long enough to give an undistorted rendering, and flexible enough to allow anything between a face shot from a 1m distance and a full body shot at 2-3m. Plenty of good legacy lenses with f1.8 available for next to nothing.
