Just to be sure that you get a variety of viewpoints, I'm not sure that a DSLR is the best choice at this point. Bridge cameras have advanced enormously since 2002.

A Canon SX 50 HS would be a fantastic, exponentially better camera than your F717. As would a Panasonic FZ200.

For a reasonably still subject on a feeder during daylight, either will be easier to use, and the resolution will stomp on T3i with a 55-250 (particularly the SX 50). And I say this as someone who has both a T3i and 55-250, which I enjoy very much - but I have different needs than you.

Thank you for the suggestions of different cameras. I looked at both cameras and prefer the SX50 due to the articulating lcd screen. This is a MUST for me. I am somewhat physically limited, and can't twist around and upside down to get the shots I want, also lightweight is very good due to the same reason. I realize dslrs are not all that lightweight, but most of the time, I set up my F717 on a tripod to maximize the quality of the pic, so I just assumed I would do the same with the t3i. I didn't make the weight or lcd a factor in my original post because it wasn't relevant. But if I go looking at other cameras, a fixed back lcd is out. The SX50 looks very interesting, and is definitely something I will consider. Thank you very much!
