My guess is that the ideal solution, from the vantage of video, would be to use sensors with exactly 1920x1080 pixels, which would be "perfect" resolution for video, and avoid the need for messy ditigal downsampling, but too low for stills.

This is exactly what I bought the Canon HF-M40. I am going to be recording some videos to compare it with the NEX-6 today...nothing scientific unless you guys want to offer some tips to make it a more valuable comparison but I expect the 1920x1080 native chip of this camcorder to do better.
