I shot wakeboarding pictures last summer using a 7D and 70-200/2.8 and got decent results...a few thoughts:
- Since the skiier is at a constant distance (more or less) from the boat and traveling in an arc, once you get your focal length set, consider shooting on manual focus (camera doesn't have to try to find/lock focus while shooting the action).
- Next - I prefer using shutter priority mode for action sports (especially with questionable lighting) to ensure I get the action frozen like I want.
- Be sure to use IS - the vibration from the boat will make it necessary
- I also like to set the shooting mode to continuous/high speed...and shoot WAY more than I think I'll need/use.
I think that covers the basics...let me know if there was something else causing your problems.
