The other problem with ALL Olympus cameras is the bit rate is too small. This means if you get too much motion the video breaks up in to larger macro blocks. Try videoing some trees with green leaves (hard to do these days where I live) and see what happens. It is not pretty.

Only if you are moving the camera all over the place. If you are doing a journalistic "documentary", you are gonig to have the camera on a tripod anyway and doing slow pans, zooms and pulls, etc.

With the smaller and lighter E-pl2, you can get away with a smaller and lighter tripod, etc. and that matters when you are traveling.

btw, and FYI for videographers...green uses more of that bit-rate than other colors and is more demanding.

There isn't any green where the OP is going anyway, it is all poor people in front of distressed concrete.

Otherwise it wouldn't be a "documentary".

I anticipate there will be many occasions when I will take my camera and leave the tripod behind to keep my pack light. So handheld video quality is important

About the location, it will be very green in some places. The part of Ecuador I'll be staying is in between the Andes Mountains and the Amazon Rainforest. So I will be doing plenty of landscape, plants, wildlife photography as well, but long-term that's not the subject I'm most interested in. Anyway, I imagine the setting will be quite green most of the time, and not much concrete. I didn't think that would demand for a better codec.

take everthing so seriously?

In terms of the Olympus PEN cameras, I'm also concerned with the amount of physical controls you get. It just looks very basic, but perhaps there is more control there than meets the eye. I'll have to read up on it.

All PENs have full manual control.  Some models have more dials than others.
