16-85 vs. 18-105

I am considering a D5100 and I have been a bit all over the map on what lens(es) to pair it with.  I read a number of reviews yesterday and I am considering the 16-85 or 18-105.  From what I read, it would seem the 16-85 has a slight edge in sharpness and has less barrel distortion.  I wonder how much difference this amounts to in real world shooting of family pictures.

I found myself drawn to the 16-85 simply because it is the better of the two in quality/performance.  Yet the longer range of the 18-105 would be beneficial at times.  The lenses are comparable in size and weight so that is basically a non-issue.

I would love to read insights from others, especially those that have experience with both.
