I have the non IS version & it's a cracking lens. I bought it used in mint condition. It's sharp as long as you get focusing right like all lenses. With macro, however, A/F is seldom used by many. I was considering the L myself, but a lot of my macro is done on a tripod, & so IS is of little use. In fact I read reviews that say, although the IS on the L version is worth 4 stops, when doing 1:1 macro, it's only 1 stop or 2 at the most. It's a matter of choice as to whether you think it's worth the extra.
