As one or two posters have noted, there does seem to be a variance between particular instances of the FZ200.  Perhaps it is so fine a wrought instrument that it is difficult for Panasonic to impose quality control sufficient to ensure each and every FZ200 emerges from the production line in perfect trim?

The FZ200 acquired by the ladywife seems able to do very well indeed via RAW processing in ACR.  Some examples posted on the web seem well below this standard.  Is it the particular camera; the software used to render the image; the workflow of the user; the translation process used to render into a web image?  Hard to know.

One thing about the otherwise very informative DPR reviews I find tiresome is their offering of good/bad points concerning aspects that are a matter of opinion not objective fact.  For example:

  • I much prefer a pdf manual to a paper one as it doesn't get lost once on the computer and is easy to word-search for a particular topic.  This is a good not a a bad point - for me.
  • An auto switch between EVF and screen is, in my experience, a nuisance not a good point.  Often such a switch is flakey; and I want anyway to decide my viewing mode, not leave it to a camera robot.  Another "bad" point that is really a good one - for me.
  • As to "loads of special effects" being a good point, well this just clutters up the menus and controls with frippery so is a bad point - for me.

Etc..

One thing seems clear, though.  The great majority of user opinions seem very positive concerning the FZ200 results and it's usability.  The same seems to be true for most web reviews.  Most important of all: the ladywife loves the wee thing.
