Hi,

By all means get the 50 mm f/1.8 but as a 2nd lens and not as a replacement for your 18-55 kit lens. 50 mm on a Rebel is not for general purpose but is a telephoto and very suitable for portraits and low light. The difference to your 18-55 mm lens at 50 mm is that the f/1.8 has more than 3 stops advantage. At large aperture you can separate your subject much better from the (unsharp) background.

So it is certainly worthwhile having both lenses.
