A fellow over on FM forums has been relaying his experience with is 1 day old RX1 (he's in Japan). Here's more comments from today:
Today I left it in AF and tried to keep a low ISO. I said last night the AF was a little slow, but after trying in the day it is certainly comparable to the Olympus PEN line. It's not DSLR fast, but it's perfectly acceptable. Overall, I still am leaning towards keeping this camera in MF because it gives a much better sense of control.
What I'm pleased to continue to hear is how positive the manual focus experience is with this camera - that goes a long way to addressing any possible AF issues, at least for me.
Currently I'm shooting nothing but manual focus lenses but once in a while I'd like some help, or would like to be lazy.
Thanks for the update. AF is a vital feature for the RX1 as it seems to be the best -IMHO- camera for street photography; size about a P&S camera, s-i-l-e-n-t and sufficient pixels to use it as a 35-50/f2 zoom, hi-ISO enabling 1/250 in evening hours; these were what I have dreamed of as a film Leica user since decades. However I also have dreamed of having an AF capability like this one:

With a relatively fast and reliable AF, add a 35mm finder -I have the SBLOO- and you are ready to cover any situation requiring instant reflexes, day and night. These take more than what the classical rangefinders like Leica, film or digital, could offer.
(BTW, have you ever taken a look through a SBLOO? You hardly go back to any rangefinder viewfinder.)
