That deal on an Olympus ep1 sounds too good to pass up. At double the price the Panasonic G3 may have lost the best-bang-for-the-buck crown, but functionally I'd say the built-in viewfinder and articulating screen make it the better choice for a ten year-old.

The only mft camera one should really avoid is the E-P1 ! at here is a reason why they cost so much less :

  • They are slow to focus, especially with the first 14-42mm kitzoom they come with,
  • They have a low fps,
  • They have a bad LCD, which is almost impossible to use in bright sun,
  • Yet, they lacks the accessory plug which would allow you to use an E-VF,
  • The button layout is not as good as on the later model.

Yes, that was a typo. I was referring to the refurbished EPL1 mentioned earlier in the thread.

Slow AF would probably be one of the things she finds frustrating with the OP's daughter's current camera (a P&S).

Oh.. OK then, no problem. I just wanted to warn people against the E-P1, which is a false good deal.

I don't think that there is a lot of difference between the E-Pl1 and E-Pl2. But then I know them less than the E-Ps.

I own an E-PL1.  By the same reason I'd also advise against an E-PL1.  Slower to focus, have to fiddle with directional buttons to control aperture/shutter.  The latter is a no-go if you really want your child to learn - they should focus on the scene, instead of on the camera.  So the less  steps required to control aperture/shutter, the better.
