I know this question has been asked to death, but with the Canon Pixma Pro9000 and the 9500 dropping in price with current rebates I was wondering if it was worth getting a printer for home photo usage.
Is it cheaper to outsource prints or print at home (I dont print too often)?

It is certainly less expensive to get a lab to print for you.

Is editing with a wide gamut monitors a necessity if printing with one of these printers?

No, it would help to have a calibrated monitor, but exactly the same could be said for external printing too.

What you get from printing your own is control of the process from begining to end, You also get consistancy from print to print.
