My S95 is acting the same way, it does not retain the metering mode, so I called Tech support to check and they advised it should retain metering after power off.
However it did not work for me and they said to send it in for a $140 repair since it is out of warranty...........which I'm not going to do
After contacting a Canon supervisor they apologized for the misinformation
