I have 85mm F1.8G. I find it hit or miss for portraits. It can give a harsh look at times. I am still learning how to best use as it can be a super sharp lens no question. Its more the colour rendition and overall image look that I feel is lacking at times. Thats the lack of ED glass for you.
I have a 105mm F2.5 manual focus, very cheap, its fantastic.
I also got a Nikor 55mm F2.8 micro that takes wonderful closeup portraits and I find I use that more often.
50mm F1.8g is also a good lens and cheap.
You already have 105 VR so Samyang 85mm F1.4 (assuming you get a good copy which is a real risj with Samyang) is an option.
