Firstly.. that sucks. Never fun to have damaged equipment. We love our cameras and insured or not, it's never fun.

Second.. did you have an agreement/understanding with your friend? As in, we understand that we'll be super careful/not do certain things and that's why I'm bringing my camera in the canoe? If not, you can't expect a friend to be responsible when something goes wrong.

As for the camera.. if you like the D800, keep the D800. If you're feeling swamped by file sizes, maybe try a D600. As for the D800E, I feel like those who get it are those who absolutely know it's what they need. Otherwise, stick with the D800.

And again.. crappy situation. Sorry!
