Having had my D7000 for some months now, I can generally manage to get a 'correct' photo of whatever I want now. i.e. ok lighting, in focus, etc.

But, I haven't taken a lot of beautiful photos. Ones that 'pop' like being discussed in a current thread.

The ones I have, have almost all been taken with the same lens, an old manual focus Nikon Micro-NIKKOR 55mm f/2.8 AI-s. That's fine for macro, but it would be nice to have something auto-focus for more everyday use.

My 70-300mm seems nice, that takes decent photos. I haven't given this one a fair enough trial, I think it is probably quite capable.

The lens I question is my 18-70mm. I just don't seem to really like what I get from this lens. Of course, I understand it is mostly technique - but if I try hard, I can do it with the 55mm. But I don't seem to get the same results from this 18-70. It was purchased used.

So basically, I am happy with 2 out of 3 lenses. I would like a faster lens, as I like to use a shallow depth of field fairly often. And good bokeh is a priority for me. I don't have to have VR, as it won't be a long telephoto. IF is nice, but not absolutely necessary.

I unfortunately can't spend a fortune, or I'm sure I could think of plenty of lenses. Any suggestions for something to either replace the 18-70, or maybe a fast prime to add to my collection?

What I should (and will do) is take the same photo (essentially) with all the lenses, and make sure it isn't my imagination. But I'd probably still like something faster with good bokeh.

Hi TAM63. Someone suggested to get "any" Tamron version 17-50 2.8, that is not a good suggestion at all, in fact i will recomend to completely avoid the VC version, it is terrible!

I have had a total of seven different lenses and my favorite one to make photos POP is the Rokinon 85 1.4, it is manual focus just like your 55mm, it is a fantastic lens and it will only cost you $300 dollars. Other than that if you want auto focus the Nikon 85 1.8G is a no brainer for the price, or a 50 1.4,  Here is a site for the Rocko just to give you an idea:
