Coverage of similar sized lenses
Nov 16, 2012

When I compare how much coverage at 18 I get with my 18-105 vs my Sigma 18-50, in fact my 18-105 is wider at 18.  I used to shoot with a Sigma 10-20 for real estate but got real tired of the distortion (that I could correct somewhat but too many clients kept complaining).  Now I shoot with my 18-105 mostly at 18.  I back up as far as I can and compose differently.  Even if I zoomed out my 10-20 to 18 it still distorted as a wide angle lens would.

Which brings me to my question:  what spec that I could read in a lens' description would let me know which lens at "full wide" is indeed wider and, if so, by how much?

Further, would any specs let me know if a 16-85 is that much "wider" at 16 than a Tamron 17-50 is at 17.  I was very surprised how much wider my 18-105 at 18 than my Sigma 18-50 is at 18 so it would be nice to find out from specs without having to do side by side testing.  I know intuition would lead one to believe that 17 is wider than 18 and 16 is wider than 17 but until I see how much with my own eyes, well, I'm skeptical.  Thanks.
