The guide number is a measure of power. When it comes to flashes, power (and adjustment of that power) is king. Every accessory you use to shape or diffuse the light reduces the power output meaning higher iso, wider aperture or losing some of the shaping qualities and soft/hardness of the light by moving the flash closer to the subject.
