The bottom line is sensor based becomes problematic when focal lengths get long because the sensor can't physically move far enough to correct the image movements. The lens works like the shift of a perspective correcting lens, but moves the sensor instead. It can only shift 1 or 2mm from the center position, and on a 500mm lens it is much easier to move the lens further than the sensor can correct. As long as you keep your movements small enough it should be fine. I wouldn't mind seeing hybrid systems, have sensor based for all the medium focal length lenses and switch to optical for the more telephoto lenses.
Something like that. I can use IBIS with a consistently high keeper rate hand held at 500, but at 1000 (above the 800 in body limit) it becomes very difficult and I would estimate no more than 1 out of 10 even with best practices (support, positioning and breathing technique). I guess OIS is better for extreme telephoto (read: somewhere between 500-1000). This, in my view, is compensated entirely by the fact that even small, sharp primes are getting the benefit of IBIS on a Pentax body. My Canikon friends are amazed at what sort of pictures I can turn out with a manual 135 Takumar with IBIS and CIF.
