It can only shift 1 or 2mm from the center position, and on a 500mm lens it is much easier to move the lens further than the sensor can correct. As long as you keep your movements small enough it should be fine. I wouldn't mind seeing hybrid systems, have sensor based for all the medium focal length lenses and switch to optical for the more telephoto lenses.
