I also find the D800 grip to be strange, cutting into the top finger (in my case, the middle finger) on the right hand. My D200 feels better, though the tapered butt of the D800 allows the camera to rest more sure against the palm.
Again, I'm the sort that just doesn't like modern SLR design, finding it obviating good optics and secure hold for more convenience. If you don't shoot sports or BIF, modern SLRs of any brand are simply gargantuan, squinty, and heavy.
I would have preferred a D600 had the accessory set I use been compatible. The D800 is too awkward for me.
