It sounds like the backlight might have gone on the LCD. Newer ones use LED, but I think of that vintage it is CCFL (fluorescent). There are two basic components - the CCFL tubelight, and the inverter. But essentially it is all one unit.
I replaced the LCD on my S60 when a little friend accidently knocked a chair over that smashed the screen. I bought a S70 with a trashed lens for $25 on ebay and just swapped the backs. It's fairly straight forward to do it.
(I actually have to pull my S60 apart again because the lens has jammed open and the normally recovery mechanisms aren't working. A filler, I bought a A620 for $25 on ebay "for parts" but I fixed both problems - a stuck lens cover and misplaced SD cover - in about an hour).
