Mid range zoom will be a good start

There are plenty of offerings from both Nikon as well as 3rd parties for mid range zoom (wider side starting at around 24mm to 28mm while the longer end goes to anywhere from 70mm to ~100mm). There are fixed aperture lenses (those are a little more expensive) and also variable aperture lenses (cheaper). I suggest starting with a variable aperture lens. If your budget goes up at a later date, you can always sell your old lens and buy more expensive ones later. Nikon lenses hold up value very well. So, you will not lose much, if any.
You will have multiple choices at under $500.
