Status of Canon's SX230 HS for Grand Canyon?

Man - you will need a wideangle - much wider than 28mm!!

None of the cameras discussed here can deliver this. So - if you feel the SX 230 is reliable and comfortable to carry then give it a try. If you have a wider angle option - take this.
