I exaggerate for effect a bit, I am sure they are not making a loss here, but I don't imagine they would have brought the price down as rapidly if they hadn't spotted a chance to grow market share rapidly in the FF sector against Canon, while people are waiting for the 6D. As I say, most of the D600 customers will be new to Nikon FF and need new lenses, unlike a lot of D800 customers.
