I agree with most of what you said.

Did you also try D800 + 70-200VR2 combo?

I have both combos and they are really a very close in AF performance.

One aspect of 5D3 AF that I've found deficiency is on autofocus point selection.

It consistently picks closest focus point(s) in the focus group while on D800 it can lock into correct subject based on color, shape or subject contrast.

True. I have found no issue with green casts on my D700, D2X or D800....simply profile your camera and you're done.

When it comes to rez, noise and DR, the 5D3 still lags....as it does in build quality. Hopefully Canon can find their way again and improve their sensors. AF is identical in real world use for the most part.

Incorrect. The d800 build is inferior to the 5D3 - I should know, I went through 4 defective d800e bodies. The CF card door is thin and the grip creaks when held tightly. The grip design is also thin with a poor thumb hook - this makes the camera uncomfortable to hold. The ergonomics of this camera are a step backwards from the d700 and it generally feels less robust. The Canon AF module is superior to the d800, which is simply less reliable - particularly in low light situations. QC on the Nikons is poor, with consistently poor L bank AF performance. I believe Nikon really needs to update this AF module to match up to the demands of that sensor.

If you shoot manual landscapes on a tripod, then it's a great choice - the clarity and resolution of the d800e is remarkable and AF issues are less relevant with this method. The d800e has a great sensor - but it's stuck in a mediocre body with subpar AF. I was enamored with this camera, initially, but after extensive shooting, between the build, grip, AF problems and slow feel - I simply got fed up with it. I've been more than happy with the 5D3 - I simply enjoy shooting more and it's image quality is excellent. For general purposes, it's the superior camera.
