FINAL UPDATE:

SONY Laredo received the camera on Nov 10.  I just now got it back (Nov 15) and it appears it's clean.  Was done free of charge. Considering there was an intervening weekend PLUS a national holiday I certainly have no complaints with their service - although I certainly understand others have had different results.

Just for amusement I checked the status of the repair order on their service website and it shows:

"The Sony product that you have inquired about is currently with a technician. The repair has not yet been completed. Repairs take approximately 10 working days to complete."
