Like my electric toothbrush and my inkjet printer, the body is sold as a loss leader, the consumables (in this case lenses) are where the margins are, once the consumer is hooked.
Time to look at legacy lenses...
The camera bodies are not sold as loss-leaders. Lenses are not consumables. If anything, the camera body is consumable. And, even if they were, Nikon sells less than two lenses for each body sold...
