Many other options between the two listed, first is something like the Sony RX100, get better picture quality than the compacts but is still small and easy to carry. You can move up to a m4/3 body, typically a little more expensive than a entry level DSRL but there are higher ratio zooms available if you do not want to carry extra lenses. Next step up is to something like the NEX for Sony or the Fuji APS-C models with interchangeable lenses or even the Canon GX1. Better image quality than m4/3 as good as all but the FF DSLR models.

For the Sony A57 you can get a 18-270 or 18-250 lens, which gives you a lot of zoom range. The NEX line has a 18-200. In either case you are not getting a compact camera. The A57 with a 28mm f/2.8 makes a nice compact package for general photography. Shame Sony does not make the lens, used Minolta are around though and you can get the Sony 30mm or 35mm for only $200.
