Lighting for infant portraits

I have a new baby and want to take some good photos.  Partial to those on photographer's websites where the baby is against a black or white background which is blown out in one direction or the other.   We bought some black and white cloth to put her on, but I'm not sure how to get it to be either completely black or white.  Equipment is d90, sb200, tamron 90mm macro, and nikon 50 1.8d.  I've been using the tamron but will probably switch to the 50 for working space reasons.  Not looking to buy more equipment at this time.  So far I have just been using window light with no flash.  Setup/lighting suggestions (and any other tips) would be highly appreciated.
