I second (or fourth) the comments here about needing a wider lens... you can also zoom with your feet if the lens you have is not long enough... but backing up over the Tiber River or the Po is not an option! I have a backpack and about a dozen other bag types... they are all good for specific jobs, but sadly there is not one PERFECT bag. My problem with a backpack in Rome is twofold.... one, you have to take it off or sling it around to open and access your gear. Where you gonna put it down in a crowd to get your gear? And my Lowepro waist/sling backpack is a not easily to move when wearing a coat. Backpacks are fine when you have a bicycle or are hiking long distances (which is why mine is virgin)... I love shoulder bags (over shoulder or over your neck for added security) the look like messenger bags for more security in urban crowd situations. Not only to they not SCREAM to gypsies RICH AMERICAN!!!!!, but they make sense for easy access and fast access.
Look at the Tenba messenger large bag -- it provides a secret zipper on the top and can carry a laptop.
Good luck and have fun, ciao!
