Yes, a Symbian device can perform many similar tasks in comparison to other smartphones, and it is surely usable to some point. What I think is the main gripe with most people is on the web-browsing capabilities of it among other things. The interface of non-Symbian OS smartphones offers a smoother and quicker response when performing most tasks on the touch screen, especially during web-browsing and sending text or messages. Overall higher usability and ease of use.
I think it's just a marketing that pushes people to browse heavy pages on their mobile phones. It will just never be convenient on a 4-5" screen regardless of browser speed. For basic web tasks 808 will do the job, even N8 does all the web job for me...but these days people are thaught it's modern to browse on your phone. I have tried browsing on SGSIII(arguably best mobile phone browsing experience) and found that I need 3-4 more time to finish something than on my PC. I appreciate my time sorry.
Also messaging on FP2 is on par with modern phones. Keyboard is Android-like etc. I have Sony Xperia beside my N8 and I don't find myself typing significantly faster on it, there is a small difference probably but negligible.
808 is meant for people that like nature and when in nature take pics of it record birds etc. Geekophones are made for geeks that will try to search for a WiFi signal in the middle of a forest to check them on facebook.
