Can the Fujifilm S5000 still cut it?

I have the opportunity to buy a Fujifilm S5000 (2003 model) from a friend at what I consider to be a good price (£80).
I've read the review on this site (and others) which give this camera an average-to-good rating for a compact DSLR (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilms5000). I've been wanting to invest in a camera like this for a while, but being self employed the new ones are just out of my financial reach!
I currently shoot film, and while I love the analogue side I need a digital cam with similar control over aperture and shutter speed. I'm what you'd call a keen amateur...
Does the S5000 still cut it in terms of image quality, or would cheaper DSLR/Bridge cameras available today be a better option?
Thanks, Lee
