The 5D produces nice enough jpegs, with the only negative being some smearing even at Low ISO's - Does turning the Noise reduction down take that away? Its not a big issue as the Raws look so good, but just seems a bit unnecessary?

Simon, I have taken on this issue to figure out what is going on and have come to these conclusions. Bottom line, if you need to shoot jpeg and have the time to post, turn the NR down or off, turn the sharpening off in-camera, add a little USM in post, and you will have some of the best jpegs on the market.

1. Canon changed the in-camera sharpening from the 5DII to the 5DIII. It is not as good and a step backwards. Frankly, It SUCKS. Sadly, the same sharpening is used in the 1DX, so this goes for it as well.

2. At low ISO, noise reduction in NR off and NR low is 0,0 so that does help.

3. Turn sharpening in-camera all the way off too, set it to 0

4. Even the most basic, light USM in Photoshop is miles better than the camera can do. Start with USM 300, .3, 0 for a drastic improvement of detail in the jpegs.

Thanks for the response, it sounds like its fully resolveable with in camera tweaking.

SOunds like its time to warn the bank manager!
