Not sure if this was also the case with the old firmware. But at the moment when I attach the HVL-F43AM flash to the NEX-7 and switch AF assist to AUTO in the menu, the only light that is emitting is the one on the camera. The flash does not assist.

Does this work for somebody? Did I forget something?

No, it would not work.

The AF assist light (projecting a near IR pattern) in the F43Am is designed for phase detection AF, and it does not help the contrast detection AF in NEX-7. The AF assist light from the camera is exactly what it needs.

Ah, t that's maybe also the reason why my Metz flash won't fire AF Assist on my NEX-6 as well.
