Apologies if this topic was discussed before:

Since its introduction, Foveon kept its pixel count low (if you disregard the x3 claim). My question is why Sigma doesn't design and manufacture a Foveon sensor with true 24-36M pixels for any of its cameras?

Hi Mikeber

the topic has come up often. there are some very knowledgeable chip tech people, and I believe the design of a three layer sensor is not as straightforward as bayer sensors. the latest Merrill sensor is a really nice upgrade technologically, and from the images, I think they picked a good point. if they go full frame (another tech difficulty for a 3 layer sensor), it will be interesting to see where it goes!
